The non-profit organization TOIT D'UNION was founded in 2020 by a group of parents and community members committed to creating safe and supportive living environments for adults living with intellectual disabilities.
To create supportive living environments that meet the needs of adults living with an intellectual disability, so that they can thrive while promoting their autonomy, self-determination, and the development of their full potential.
TOIT D'UNION advocates respect for difference, fraternity, generosity, solidarity, inclusion, and equal opportunity. Toit D'UNION fights indifference, discrimination, prejudice, and all other forms of rejection.
To offer each of our 12 residents a studio-type living space, as well as common areas including kitchen, dining room and living room, in order to foster community spirit, training, the development of autonomy and socialization.
Offer personalized support to each resident to promote autonomy and integration into community life. Implement an intervention plan to foster the development of strategies and tools needed to develop their autonomy.
To ensure the safety and supervision of our residents, the team will be present 24/7 and will include: a coordinator, a night supervisor and a weekend care worker.
The driving force behind the project, Isabelle is the mother of a teenager with intellectual disability who dreams of independence. Her expertise in marketing and philanthropy is crucial to achieving the organization's objectives, enabling it to promote its activities, raise funds and raise public awareness of its cause.
An engineer and IT expert, Patrick is also the father of a teenager with intellectual disability. These skills are key to the NPO's ability to communicate effectively with its members and target audience, and to raise funds efficiently.
Anne-Carole chose to get involved with TOIT D'UNION to make a positive difference in the lives of our future residents. As a lawyer, her understanding of the regulations governing the operation of NPOs and her sound legal advice are invaluable assets to the organization.
Motivated by a deep love of humanity, Denis has been working in the field of pedagogy and training management for over 30 years. His propensity for innovation, his ability to mobilize teams and his understanding of the needs of adults with intellectual disabilities are key to the organization.
Intellectual disability (ID) is now categorized as a neurodevelopmental disorder, like autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This means that ID is considered, in most cases, to be a disorder usually diagnosed in childhood, often of genetic and/or hereditary origin, and associated with neuropsychological/cognitive dysfunctions. In Quebec, approximately 1-2% of the population has an intellectual disability. For the vast majority, or 85% of cases, this is a mild ID (DIL). Since the deinstitutionalization movement (1950-1980), most people with ID have lived in the community. Services tend to be organized around the principles of self-determination and inclusion. Despite crying needs, services for adults over 21 living with ID are very limited. Despite their challenges, these adults aspire to autonomy, which is often possible with the right level of day-to-day support. TOIT D'UNION aims to create supportive living environments so that its residents can flourish and develop their full potential.
